Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)

what is reflexology lymph drainage logo

Reflexology Lymph Drainage is an evidence based, ground breaking reflexology technique. It focuses on stimulating the reflexes on the feet that relate to the lymphatic system. It was originally researched and developed by Sally Kay to benefit cancer patients who experience lymphoedema (swelling of the arm) following medical intervention. After breast cancer, a person may experience psychological or emotional difficulties due to altered body image. A swollen limb can exacerbate this. Although there is no cure, RLD may help manage the symptoms.

To quote the Federation of Holistic Therapist’s magazine “RLD is a reflexology technique that isolates and systematically stimulates the lymphatic reflexes of the feet, using a problem-specific sequence. the treatment is adapted according to the site of secondary lymphoedema, focusing on the reflexes to encourage the excess lymph away from the damaged area towards the nearest uncompromised lymphatic drainage area. RLD can also be used when treating clients with other conditions.”  In layman’s terms it means RLD helps move lymph and swelling from areas of the body that aren’t working as well as they should be, to areas of the body where it can be dealt with more effectively.

Personally I find it very helpful for lymphoedema of the legs as well as easing excess fluid with lipoedema.
